Portugal. The Man - People Say

This is the first song off the latest album…they blew me away on Saturday of Outside Lands.  They’re coming back to the independent in 3 weeks…and i think i’m going to have to see them again, instead of seeing Rodrigo Y Gabriela for the first time…

Pete Yorn & Scarlett Johansson - Search Your Heart

So Scarlett Johansson has teamed up with Pete Yorn this time around to put out a very solid duet album called “Breakup”.  You can actually hear her voice this time and it’s not bad at all!

Cut Copy - Hearts On Fire (Holy Ghost! Remix)

i’m a huge sucker for the awesome disco holy ghost! has been throwing at us this year. and everybody already knows i’m a total cut copy sucker, too. but i’m the biggest sucker of all for extended remixes of ‘hearts on fire.’ this one is awesome, dj mehdi’s is a classic, and neel rao’s 2001 remix is my personal favorite.

Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros - 40 Day Dream

i haven’t been too keen on rock music coming out this year, but this band has really caught my attention. their debut album ‘up from below’ is straight out of the age of aquarius. amazing indie-folk music with inspiring psychadelic elements. it’s frighteningly upbeat and little bit too anthemy, but for a debut i give it a huge two thumbs up. they’ll be the first act at treasure island on the 2nd day. i’m buying my ticket this week and this band really tipped the scales on the festival for me.

Shakira - Loba

this is shakira’s new single and video. the album comes out in october. this is the spanish version, english version can be found here. is it me or is shakira getting hotter, her music getting better, and her dance moves getting more wicked?

Simian Mobile Disco - Bad Blood feat. Alexis Taylor

the album comes out on the 17th, but as of this morning the entire thing can be easily (and illegaly?) downloaded. the guest vocals are pretty nuts. you already heard chris keating on audacity of huge, beth ditto has one song, and most awesomely alexis taylor sings on this song.

K’Naan - I Come Prepared Feat. Damian Marley

if you’ve listened to my shows at all this year or driven around in my car then you’ve definitely heard some songs from k’naan’s newest album ‘troubadour.’ it’s my favorite hip-hop album of the year so far—and in my opinion it’s been a pretty solid year for hip-hop overall. the music blends old school and new school rap, reggae, somali music, and a few ethopian musical styles. the rapping style is probably closest to eminem overall, but most of the lyrical content on the album discusses his upbringing in somalia during their civil war. generally speaking the lyrics are a refreshing change from rap that dwells on violence, homophobia, and ridiculous posturing and pride. unfortunately k’naan sometimes falls victim to the gangster rap culture of honor he criticizes, noting, for example, how “hard” somalis are compared to their inner city american counterparts.

i’ve been meaning to post about k’naan since this blog has existed but i guess it slipped my mind. the album is great and i had the pleasure of seeing him live at coachella in april. i finally got around to posting this after reading greg mankiw’s blog post about him. if you’re looking for good music suggestions stay far, far away from mankiw’s blog—jason mraz is his latest recommendation. and i vomited in my mouth just a little bit last year when he dubbed vampire weekend the best new rock band he’s heard. i’ve been a mankiw blog reader since the first day he posted and he does have a lot of enlightening, easy to read comments on politics and economics, if you’re into that sort of thing.

YACHT - Psychic City (Voodoo City)

so apparently i saw this group on friday. there is picture evidence and a t-shirt to prove it. i believe they were super fun and really got the electro dance party going. their album is bomb and they’re super nice. also one of the funniest and down to earth groups in recent memory.

Thrice - Double Speak

how could i not put up new thrice? they had to push up the release to august 11 because the album leaked. lots of really good releases coming up through august: calvin harris, simian mobile disco, the used, imogen heap, arctic monkeys, third eye blind, and modest mouse (and ya, i’m excited for cobra starship, too).
